WHY DO GODFATHERS AND GODMOTHERS OF BAPTISM HAVE TO BE MARRIED BY THE CHURCH?
Being a godfather or godmother, not only of Baptism, but of any Sacrament, represents the Church itself. It's not just only because it's someone in the family, acquaintance, or the one who is going to pay for the party. Godfathers and godmothers, represent our Church during that special time. And if they represent it, they must do so completely.
We get requests very often to baptize, asking to permit couples who are married only by civil law and not by the Church, to be the godparents. The answer is they CAN NOT because then they are NOT fully representing the Church.
We do not judge them for or for not being married by the Church, that is
something personal, but if they want to be godparents by the Church it is
because they are going to set an example of life for their godchild by living their faith and receiving their sacraments.
The godson or goddaughter is "seeing" in their godparents that the Sacrament of Marriage is not necessary, and the reality is that we need God in our lives and give an example of his presence in everything we do.
If inviting God to marry us through the Church, we go through what we go through, what happens if we don't have it?
